The Japanese term Bunjingi (文人木) literally means “literary man’s tree.”

The aesthetic is intentionally anti-monumental: where other bonsai styles aim for balanced triangular compositions of stability and strength, the literati deliberately embrace imperfection, emptiness, and asymmetry.
